LOCK FOR DOORS AND WINDOWS Filed Feb. 1, 1946 ATTD RN EYS Patented Feb. 21, 1956 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LOCK FOR DOORS ANB WINDOWS Mark R. Deyo, Peoria, Ill. Application February 1, 1946, Serial No. 644,811
1 Elaim.
The invention relates to a closure fastener, and more especially to a door or window lock.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character, wherein an eye hook is attached to a door or window frame, so that when the hook is engaged with an eye it can be firmly and securely held in a fastening position making it impossible to unlatch the said door or window from the outside.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character, wherein it is readily and easily applied in a usable position for the fastening of a door or window closed with security against opening thereof, the lock being of novel construction and is unique in the assembly of its parts, which are few in number.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, readily and easily handled for locking and unlocking purposes, strong, durable, assuring safety in its use, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a view showing a portion of a barrier and its frame, with the lock constructed in acordance with the invention in looking position;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the lock;
Figure 3 is an edge elevation of the actuator for the lock.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a portion of a horizontally swinging door, while B denotes generally a portion of a door frame therefor, yet in lieu thereof may be a window assembly, as the door and frame are merely shown for illustrative purposes in the mounting of the lock constituting the present invention and hereinafter described.
The lock constituting the present invention, comprises a hook member If] which has a bill I l for engaging in an eye 12, adapted to be properly secured on the door A at the innermost side of the same, and this member remote from the bill H is formed with an eye terminal [3, while next to the latter is a substantially half-circular or arch bend i4.
Mounted on the frame B at the vertical side thereof is a rotor in the form of a Spool l5, which between the inner and outer spaced annular flanges l S and Il respectively, thereof is arranged an eccentric wrist pin l8, it having axial mounting with the said flanges, and loosely engaged with this pin it is the eye terminal is of the member ill. The spool i5 is hubbed on a screw l 9, which is fixed in the frame B for the rotation of the rotor on a horizontal axis, as best seen in Figure 2 of the drawing.
The outer flange H is formed with finger engaging wings it so that the rotor can be manually turned, and the bend l4 affords a clearance for the hub of such spool 15 when the hook memher to has been engaged in the eye l2 and thereby holding the bill ll latched securely therein.
The latched position of the hook member In is clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawing and to release the bill from the eye l2 the spool i5 is turned clockwise eccentrically lowering the hook member l i] so that it can be manually disengaged from the eye l2 by releasing the bill II therefrom. When the spool i5 is turned counterclockwise the bill I l is urged into the eye I2, with the bend it underslung to the hub of the said spool, whereupon the said member in is firmly and securely latched with the said eye I2 so that the door cannot be opened or unlocked from the outside thereof.
What is claimed is:
A latch comprising a spool-like rotor, a screw adapted to pass through the core of the rotor to engage a closure member, a wrist pin eccentrically and transversely mounted on said rotor, a hook member for engaging a keeper and pivotally mounted on said wrist pin, a bend in the hook member for the seating of the rotor therein when rotating in one direction and underslung when the said member is engaged with the keeper, and finger grips carried by the rotor for manual turning thereof.
