(Cl. 292254) This invention relates to a door latch and lock and has particular reference to a door latch for use on storm doors or screen doors having provisions for preventing a person from accidentally being locked out from the outside of the door, such as frequently occurs with some types of latch mechanisms when the locking member is moved to its locked position and the door is closed.
A principal object of the invention is to provide a door latch and lock mechanism of the type described which is extremely simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and very easy to install on a door.
Another object of the invention is to provide a door latch and lock for storm doors or the like in which the locking mechanism is so designed as to prevent a person from being accidentally locked out.
Other and further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description and claims and may be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings which by way of illustration show a preferred embodiment of the invention and what I now consider to be the best mode of applying the principles thereof. Other embodiments of the invention may be used without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, my improved door latch and lock includes a casing 10 adapted to be mounted on one side of a door 12 and an operating member indicated generally at 14 adapted to be mounted on the opposite side of the door 12. A strike plate 16 is mounted on the door jamb 18 opposite the casing 10.
The strike plate 16 is of the type which includes a vertically disposed pin 20 which is slidably mounted and retained within a bracket 22 which is secured to the door jamb by screws 24. The srtike pin 20 is urged outwardly away from the door jamb by springs 26, and a cutout portion 28 in the bracket 22 exposes the central portion of the strike pin 20.
The casing 10 includes mounting flanges 30 receiving screws 32 by means of which the casing is secured to the door. The body portion 34 of the casing is provided with an opening 36 in the side wall thereof opposite the strike plate 16 and a square shoulder 38 which defines the outer edge of the opening 36. The casing 10 also is provided with a cam surface 40 outwardly of the shoulder 38. It will be seen that as the door swings to its closed position, the cam surface 40 on the casing engages the strike pin 20 to force the latter toward the jamb 18 against the force of springs 26 so that the shoulder 38 Patented Nov. 22, 1966 moves past the strike pin 20, whereupon the latter moves outwardly within the bracket 22 to a position behind the shoulder 38 to latch the door in its closed position.
A handle member 42 is pivotally mounted on a pin 44 within the casing 10 and has an inner end portion 46 having a cam surface thereon engageable with the strike pin 20 when the handle 42 is pivoted in the manner' shown in FIG. 6 to move the strike pin inwardly toward the jamb 18 out of the path of movement of the shoulder 38 to unlatch the door and allow it to be opened.
The operating member 14 on the outer side of the door may be of any suitable type and as shown includes a push button 48 urged outwardly by a spring 50 and having an inner end portion 52 projecting through the door and into the casing 10 for engagement with the inner end 46 of the handle 42. When the push butt-on 48 is depressed, the handle 42 will be pivoted in the manner shown in FIG. 6 to disengage the strike pin 20 from the shoulder 38 to allow the door tobe opened from the outside.
A locking member 54 is. rotatably mounted within the casing for rotation on an axis perpendicular to the door 12. The inner end of the lockingmember is provided with a flange 56 seated within a suitable counterbore in the end wall of the casing 10, and the locking member is assembled into the casing 10 through the opening in the end wall of the casing. The locking member 54 includes a surface 58 which is adapted to be moved into and out of the path of movement of a surface 60 on the handle member 42. The locking member 54 is shown in its unlocked position in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, and in its locked position in FIGS. 4 and 5. A spring 62 has one end inserted into a recess in the inner end 46 of the handle 42 and its other end telescoped over a post 64 on the locking member 54. The spring 62 urges the handle to the position shown in FIG. 2.
The locking member 54. is provided with an opening 66 through which the plunger 52 extends into engagement with the inner end of the handle 42. The opening 66 may be non-circular in cross section if desired so that the plunger 52 may be operated by a key lock from the outer side of the door. The locking member 54 is provided with a thumb piece 68 which in the unlocked position thereof extends vertically as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. A tapered surface 70 corresponding generally with the cam surface 40 on the casing 10 enables the strike pin 20 to engage the cam surface so as to beretracted as the door is closed. When the locking member 54 is rotated about to the position shown in FIGS. 4 and 5. the surface 58 on the locking member is disposed in the path of the surface 60 onthe handle member to prevent pivoting of the handle. Also in this position of the locking member, the thumb piece 68 forms an outwardly facing shoulder or surface which will engage the strike pin 20 in the event that the locking member is moved to its locked position when the door is open so as to prevent the strike pin 20 from reaching the cam surface 40. With this arrangement it is impossible to he accidentally locked out in the event that the locking member is accidentally or otherwise moved to its locked position when the door is open. The construction described provides a very simple and effective means of accomplishing this function.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that this is capable of modification, and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details set forth but desire to avail myself of such changes and alterations as fall within the purview of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A door latch and lock comprising a casing adapted to be mounted on one side of a door, a vertically disposed strike pin mounted on the door jamb, said strike pin being movable toward and away from said jamb and spring means urging said strike pin away from said jamb, said casing having an opening in the side Wall thereof opposite said strike pin and a square shoulder disposed outwardly of said opening and facing the door, said strike pin being disposed adjacent said opening and behind said shoulder to latch said door when the latter is in its closed position, a handle pivoted in said casing and having an inner end portion swingable through said opening into engagement with said strike pin to move the latter out ofengagement with said shoulder to unlatch the door, an operating member adapted to be mounted on the other. side of thedoor and extending through the door into engagement with said handle for pivoting the latter to unlatch'the door, said casing having an integral cam surface along said one side wall outwardly of said shoulder, said camsurface engaging said strike pin to move the latter out of the path of said shoulder as the door swings closed, a manually operable locking member rotatably mounted in said casing and having a part which, in a locked position thereof, is engageable with said handle to prevent pivoting of said handle and unlatching of said door, said locking member having a blocking portion thereon comprising an outwardly facing shoulder enga-geable with said strike pin when said locking member is in said locked position to prevent engagement of said strike pin by said cam surface on said casing as the door is closed.
2. A door latch and lock comprising a casing adapted to be mounted on one side of a door, a strike pin movably mounted on the door jamb, said casing having a shoulder thereon facing the door, said strike pin being disposed behind said shoulder to latch said door when the latter is in its closed position, a handle pivoted in said casing and engageable with said strike pin to move the latter out of engagement with said shoulder to unlatch the door, an operating member adapted to be mounted on the other side of the door and extending through the door into engagement with said handle for pivoting the latter to unlatch the door, said casing engaging said strike pin to move the latter out of the path of said shoulder as the door swings closed, a manually operable locking member in said casing and having a part which, in a locked position thereof, is engageable with said handle to prevent pivoting. of said handle and unlatching of said door, said locking member having a blocking portion thereon engageable with said strike pin when said locking member is in said locked position and i the door is open to prevent engagement of said strike pin by said casing as the door is subsequently closed.
3. A door latch and lock comprising a casing adapted to be mounted on one side of a door, a striker mounted on the door jamb for movement toward and away from said jamb and spring means urging said striker away from said jamb, said casing having an opening in the side wall thereof opposite said door jamb and a shoulder disposed to move the latter out of engagement with said shoulder to unlatch the door, an operating member adapted to be mounted on the other side of the door and extending through the door into engagement with said handle for pivoting the latter to unlatch the door, said casing having an integral cam surface along said one side wall out.-,
wardly of said shoulder, said cam surface engaging said striker to move the latter out of the path of said shoulder as the door swings closed, a manually operable locking member in said casing and having a part which, in a locked position thereof, is engageable with said handle to pre;
vent pivoting of said handle and unlatching of said door, said locking member having a blocking portion thereon engageable with said striker when said locking member is in said locked position and the door is open to prevent engagement of said striker by said cam surface on said casing as the door is subsequently closed.
4. A door latch and lock comprising a casing adapted to be mounted on one side of a door, a strike pin movably mounted-on the door jamb, said casing having a shoulder thereon facing and spaced from the door, said strike pin being disposed behind said shoulder to latch said door when the latter is in its closed position, a handle pivoted in said casing and engageable with said strike pin to move the latter out of engagement with said shoulder to unlatch the door, said casing having an integral cam surface outwardly of said shoulder, said earn surface engaging said strike pin to move the latter out of the path of said shoulder as the door swings closed, a manually operable locking member rotatably mounted in said casing and having a part which, in a locked position thereof, is engageable with said handle to prevent pivoting of said handle and unlatching of said door, said locking member having a blocking portion thereon engageable with said strike pin when said locking member is in said locked position and the dooris open to prevent engagement of said strike pin by said cam surface on said casing as the door is subsequently closed.

  1. 4. A DOOR LATCH AND LOCK COMPRISING A CASING ADAPTED TO BE MOUNTED ON ONE SIDE OF A DOOR, A STRIKE PIN MOVABLE MOUNTED ON THE DOOR JAMB, SAID CASING HAVING A SHOULDER THEREON FACING AND SPACED FROM THE DOOR, SAID STRIKE PIN BEING DISPOSED BEHIND SAID SHOULDER TO LATCH SAID DOOR WHEN THE LATTER IS IN ITS CLOSED POSITION, A HANDLE PIVOTED IN SAID CASING AND ENGAGEABLE WITH SAID STRIKE PIN TO MOVE THE LATTER OUT OF ENGAGEMENT WITH SIAD SHOULDER TO UNLATCH THE DOOR, SAID CASING HAVING AN INTEGRAL CAM SURFACE OUTWARDLY OF SAID SHOULDER, SAID CAM SURFACE ENGAGING SAID STRIKE PIN TO MOVE THE LATTER OUT OF THE PATH OF SAID SHOULDER AS THE DOOR SWINGS CLOSED, A MANUALLY OPERABLE LOCKING MEMBER ROTATABLY MOUNTED IN SAID CASING AND HAVING A PART WHICH, IN A LOCKED POSITION THEREOF, IS ENGAGEABLE WITH SAID HANDLE TO PREVENT PIVOTING OF SAID HANDLE AND UNLATCHING OF SAID DOOR, SAID LOCKING MEMBER HAVING A BLOCKING PORTION THEREON ENGAGEABLE WITH SAID STRIKE PIN WHEN SAID LOCKING MEMBER IS IN SAID LOCKED POISTION AND THE DOOR IS OPEN TO PERVENT ENGAGEMENT OF SAID STRIKE PIN BY SAID CAM SURFACE ON SAID CASING AS THE DOOR IS SUBSEQUENTLY CLOSED.
