Abstract

235,678. McCandlish, D., and Atkin, W. R,. April 10, 1924. Treatment preliminary to tanning. - Autodigested yeast or preparations of auto-digested yeast is used, with or without an activator, such as an ammonium salt, in the manufacture of leather from hides, kips, and skins in the successive operations of softening dried or other hides, removing hair or wool therefrom, and bating and puering. For example, 100 lbs. of dried hides are softened by soaking in a solution of 2 lbs. of autodigested yeast and 1 lb. of formic acid in 100 galls. of water; an alkali may be used instead of an acid.
