Abstract

156,079. R÷hm, O. Dec. 31, 1919, [Convention date]. Treatment preliminary to tanning.-Relates to processes for the depilation, neutralization and bating or hides and skins by means of pancreatic enzymes after a short preliminary treatment with an alkaline solution .and consists in adding a salt of an alkali or alkaline earth to the alkaline solution in order to obviate stiffness and overplumping. The alkaline solution may contain caustic alkalis, alkaline earths or ammonia, the salts of alkalis to be added thereto comprising sodium or potassium sulphate or chlorides of sodium, potassium, calcium, barium, &c. After the preliminary treatment, in order to neutralize the caustic alkali, sodium bi-carbonate or other suitable agent such as ammonium sulphate or chloride or weak acids such as boric or lactic acid, may be added together with the pancreatic enzymes. The preliminary treatment with, for example, caustic soda and sodium sulphate may be intensified to effect depilation before treatment with enzymes. The mixture of caustic soda and sodium sulphate may be used as a bath or by painting it on to the flesh side. Preferably the alkalis and alkali salts are mixed together in the solid state, being fused and reduced to the form of small tablets or fragments. The enzyme liquor remaining after depilation or bating may be used again for the preliminary soaking of hides, &c. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), comprises also a process in which hides are bated in a liquor comprising 100 litres of water; 100 grams of pancreas extract; 150 grams of ammonium sulphate; and 250 grams of sodium sulphate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
