Abstract

235,554. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Downer, J. M.). June 10, 1924, [Convention date]. Shaft couplings.-A plate employed to maintain in position a coupling-part secured by keys to the shaft end is also employed in conjunction with screws to force the coupling-part from its shaft. The plate 15 carries external teeth 16 and is inserted into a recess 11 in the coupling part 5, its teeth 16 passing between internal teeth 13 on the coupling part. Bolts 17 are passed through enlarged holes 18 in the plate into tapped holes in the end of the shaft 3 and force the part 5 on the keys 9 and the coned end of the shaft. To remove, the part 5 from the shaft, the bolts 17 are removed and registered in tapped holes between the holes 18 so that the bolt ends bear on the end of the shaft. When the bolts are rotated engagement between the teeth 16, 13 forces the parts apart. If the shaft &c. is not coned, longer bolts may be substituted for the bolts 17 when the parts are to be disassembled. The part 5 and a flanged end 6 of the shaft 4 are secured together by coupling bolts 24. A shouldered spacing-plate 2 is inserted between the parts 5, 6 and, in order to allow free independent rotation of the shafts, this plate may be removed laterally, after withdrawal of the bolts 24, when the shafts 3, 4 have been separated a sufficient distance. This separation is effected by bolts passed into holes in the flange 5 or 6, threaded for only part of their length to expedite the operation, the bolt ends being forced against the face. of the other flange. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), the removing-means 15 &c. may be employed for forcing any member from a shaft, rod, stud, &c. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
