Abstract

707,988. Pipe joints. COOKSON, E. Nov. 16, 1951 [Nov. 23, 1950], No. 28636/50. Class 99 (1). A union nut 5, which engages the shoulder 6 of a coupling member 3 to compress a washer 7 against the coupling member 1, is provided with gear teeth 8 whereby the union may be tightened by a removable pinion (not shown) the spindle of which engages in a hole 9a in the flange 9. More than one hole may be provided for selective engagement. The spindle may have a T-shaped actuating member connected thereto by a universal joint. The spindle may be electrically driven. The spindle may be disposed transversely of the joint and have a worm gear engagement with the union nut, or the gears may be bevel gears. The joint may be locked by a pin engaging aligned holes in the union and Bange or a false pinion having, say, two teeth may be locked in position by a split pin.
