Abstract

Wedging or jamming; casings.-A gate valve having means for wedging it on its seating and lifting it from its seating, is also provided with a short pipe section which is automaticaily brought into position to bridge the gap in the pipe when the valve is open. The valve disc 2 has at its upper end a rigid frame, composed of two longitudinal sleeves 3, 4 and two cross bolts 5, 6. Each sleeve is mounted to slide on a bolt 7, the ends of the bolts being vertically guided by ribs on the casing 1. The bolt 5 is provided with a projection 11 which engages in a recess in the casing when the valve is closed. The bolt 6 has an inclined surface 12 engaging with a corresponding surface on the member 20 carried by the spindle, to lift the valve disc from its seating. The back of the valve is similarly inclined so that it is forced on to its seating in the closed position. The bolt 6 also carries a projection 13 which acts on the face 29 of the lever 28, so that the sleeve 33 is moved into position to make the conduit continuous when the valve is open. If the valve is fitted in a pipe line of larger diameter, a short, partly-conical sleeve is provided to ensure a gradual change of section from one diameter to the other.
