Abstract
225,240. Herzmark, N. Nov. 23, 1923, [Convention date]. Starting.-In a device in which a charge of combustible mixture or carburetted compressed air is forced through a distributor into the cylinders on the expansion and compression strokes, separate chambers A, A<1> for the compressed air or mixture are connected respectively with the cylinders on the expansion stroke and those on the compression stroke, so that before the firing of the starting charge the pistons are brought automatically to a postion substantially corresponding to equal volumes in the cylinders. As shown, the chambers A, A<1> are supplied with compressed air by a hand pump B, or by a reservoir connected to a pipe C<3>, and are connected by pipes F, F<1> to an engine-driven distributor G. Pipes H - - H<3> on the distributor casing each lead to an engine cylinder or to a group of cylinders on the same stroke, and grooves M - - M<3> in the distributor are so arranged that one or other of the pipes F, F<1> is connected to the cylinders on the expansion and compression strokes. Liquid fuel is supplied from a tank I to cocks D, D<1> connected by a handle J, by which they are turned into position to receive fuel and returned to the position shown. The fuel then runs on to the closed valves E, and these are opened by depressing a bar K to supply the air and fuel to the cylinders.
