Abstract

Yarn composed of cotton or other vegetable fibre is subjected first to the action of alkali in the presence of a soap or of a salt of a sulphonated fatty acid, and then treated with an acid chloride of a carboxylic or sulphonic acid of the aromatic series. In an example, cotton yarn is first treated with a solution of caustic potash containing potash soap, and then trreated with a solution of benzoyl chloride in benzene. If caustic soda lye is employed, then an easily-soluble turkey red oil is most suitable.
