Abstract

216,096. Williams, W. May 17, 1923, [Convention date]. Nail extractors.-In a claw hammer of the kind having auxiliary means on the eye portion for engaging the head of a nail after it has bean partly withdrawn by the claw so that the nail may be completely withdrawn without necessitating the tilting of the hammer to such an extent as to cause material loss of leverage, the auxiliary means comprises a slot formed in or upon the eye substantially parallel to the haft slot. The eye a, Fig. 1, has two stamped-up jaws d forming a converging channel to receive the head g of the nail c<1> after it has been partly withdrawn by the claw c. A hole e may be provided in the eye to facilitate engagement of the jaws with the nail head and this hole may pass completely through the eye and handle h so that a very long nail may, after being partly extracted by the claw c and jaws d, be completely withdrawn, by passing the head of the nail through the hole and again rocking the hammer. Instead of forming the jaws d by stamping up parts of the eye a, they may comprise integral projections from the face of the eye, or projections on a plate fixed to and embracing the eye, or separate undercut bars may be secured in the eye in converging relation. In a modification one or more slots k<1>, Figs. 8 and 9, with converging sides are formed in the eye and the handle h is provided with recesses a<1> beneath the holes k<1> to allow the head of the nail to engage beneath the edges of the holes. Upstanding flanges m may surround the slots k<1>.
