Abstract
The device comprises a body 10 having a handle 12. The body 10 may be in the form of a substantially flat plate having clip means 16, 17, 18 provided at one or more edge regions whereby a tent peg 20 can be releasably attached to the body 10 to enable the peg to be pushed in by pressure or impact upon the handle 12, or any attached handgrip 14. Hook means, which may be formed integrally with one of the clip meanS 18, is also provided on the body 10 whereby the peg 20 can be engaged and pulled out.
Description
- 1 - A DEVICE FOR PUSHING IN AND PULLING OUT TENT PEGS OR THE LIKE
Tent pegs are conventionally hammered into the ground using a mallet and pulled out by brute force. Injuries can result, and it may be difficult to insert the peg far enough into the ground if the ground is hard or rocky or the user is not strong enough.
Elaborate machines operated by lever, by foot and sometimes including magazines of tent pegs have been proposed. Also, a device is known from DE3403770 in which a notch is provided in an elongate body having a handle at its end for engagement of the peg for purposes either of pushing in or pulling out. A sleeve is provided to slide down over the body to retain the peg in the notch during use of the device.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and more effective device for this purpose.
According to the invention a device for pushing in and pulling out tent pegs or the like comprises a body having a handle, said body also having clip means, whereby the peg or the like can be releasably attached to the body to enable the peg or the like to
be pushed in by pressure or impact upon the handle, and hook means whereby the peg or the like can be engaged and pulled out.
The body may have at least two separate clip means attachable to different parts of the peg or the like. Furthermore one of those clip means may be provided with the hook means.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Fig. 1 is a front view of a preferred embodiment of the device of the invention; Fig. 2 is a partial side view of the device of Fig. 1 in the direction indicated by arrow A; Fig. 3 is a partial rear view of the same device; and Fig. 4 is a further, but partial, front view, showing a peg fitted to the illustrated device.
The illustrated practical embodiment comprises a body 10, a handle 12 and handgrip 14.
The body 10 is made in one piece from mild steel plate, approximately l. Smm thick. It is shaped, as shown, and has three edge regions curled over to provide first, second and third clip
- 3 - portions 16, 17, 18, to permit the body to be clipped onto, and quite firmly, but releasably secured to a tent peg 20 of tubular metal, as shown in Fig. 4. The first clip portion 16 engages the free hooked end of the peg 20, the second clip portion 17 engages the curved region of the peg 20 and the third clip portion 18 engages a section of the shaft of the peg 20.
As shown best in Fig. 2, the third clip portion 18 is fashioned so that its top edge, in use, is notched or concave, thus providing a hook 15 for peg removal.
The shape of the body 10 is such that a region is cut away at 11, between the first and second clip portions 16, 17, to allow for guy lines, in cases where these are already attached to pegs, which are to be driven into the ground using this device.
The handle 12 may be steel rod of 3 or 4mm diameter welded to the the rear face of the body 10 and extending upwards therefrom where it is angled in a handgrip region 13.
In this illustrated version an enlarged handgrip 14 of high impact plastics material is moulded onto the handgrip region 13 of the handle 12. This facilitates gripping by a user when using the device to push in or pull out tent pegs. It can also be hit with a mallet or hammer when additional force is required for driving pegs into the ground.
- 4 - In use, the device is fitted onto a peg 20 by means of all three clips 16, 17, 18, as shown in Fig. 4 and the peg 20 is then pushed or driven in by means of the handle 12 and handgrip 14.
Once the peg is adequately inserted, the body 10 is released therefrom. For pulling out a peg 20, the hook 15 is engaged under the hooked region and upward force exerted on the device, again by way of the handle 12 and handgrip 14.
Variation in the detailed configuration of the body and its clips, in particular, is possible in other embodiments. The pegs for which it is used could of course be for awnings or other structures than tents, and take a different form to that shown, in which case the shape of the body of the device will be correspondingly adapted thereto.
Claims (7)
1. A device for pushing in or pulling out tent pegs or the like comprising a body having a handle, said body also having clip means, whereby the peg or the like can be releasably attached to the body to enable the peg or the like to be pushed in by pressure or impact upon the handle, and hook means whereby the peg or the like can be engaged and pulled out.
