Wedges.-A wedge a, for securing axe, hammer &c. heads and tool handles consists of a piece of spring steel bent to the shape shown in Fig. 2, or it may be formed from two pieces welded together at the apex. To assist in retaining the wedge in position, the exterior surfaces may be serrated or roughened. For chisel &c. handles, a spring tongue a<1> is formed on the tang a which need not be so resilient as the tongue. A notch f, Fig. 6, may be formed in the stop plate e of the chisel to receive the tongue when the tang is driven home.
