UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 21, 1921. Serial No. 453,993.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, ANToXIo -BERGA 3.11m, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a ne and useful Improvement in Hammers; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, 111- Figure 1, a side view of a hammer constructed in accordance with my invention, with the handle broken away.
' Fig. 2, a top or plan view.
Fig. 3, a plan view of one of the jaws detached.
Fig. 4:, a side view of the same.
Fig. 5, a rear end view of the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in hammers and particularly to hammers having nail-extracting claws, and especially to claws which are adapted to be moved with relation to each other so as to grip a nail to be extracted. The object of the invention is a simple arrangement of parts whereby a nail to be extracted may be readily gripped and firmly held, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out myinvention, I employ the usual hammer-head 6 of any approved form and applied to a handle 7 in the usual way. The head is formed on one side, opposite the hammer-face S, with a transverse slot 9 and with a vertical passage 10, the upper portion of which is of larger diameter than the lower portion so as to form a shoulder 11 to provide a seat for a camhead 12 formed on the upper end of the pin .13, which projects beyond the hammer-head and has a cap 14. Entering the slot 9 and mounted upon pins 15 and 16, are two jaws l7 and 18 provided respectively with gripping- edges 19 and 20 like the jaws of a usual claw-hammer. The inner ends of the jaws are tapered and their adjacent faces formed with cam- surfaces 21 and 22 which bear upon the cam 12.
The jaws 17 and 18 are passed upon opposite sides of a nail to be extracted and the cap 14 ofthe pin 13 will then rest upon a surface, and a movement of the handle will force the pin upward between the inner ends of the aws and so as to crowd the outer ends of the jaws together to close engagement with a nail to be extracted, whereby that nail is firmly gripped so that it may be extracted. This construction is simple, and in case either of the jaws becomes broken, it may be readily removed and replaced by another. Furthermore, the jaws may be of hardened steel so as to provide for hard usage.
I claim:
1. A hammer of the claw type having a head provided with a transverse slot and with a vertical opening, a cam located in said opening, a pair of jaws pivotally connected with the said head and extending into said slot and adapted by the inward movement of the cam to have their outer ends forced together.
2. A hammer of the claw type comprising a head formed with a transverse slot and with a vertical opening, a cam mounted in said opening, said cam formed with a pin projecting beyond the hammer-head, a pair of jaws pivotally mounted in said slot, the inner ends of the said jaws formed with cam-surfaces co-acting with the said cam.
3. A hammer of the claw type, comprising a head formed with a transverse slot and with a vertical opening, a cam in said opening, said cam formed with an outwardly extending pm provided at its outer end with a cap, a pair of jaws pivotally mounted in said slot and provided at their inner ends with cam-surfaces co-acting with said cam, whereby when said cam is forced inward, thelouter ends of the jaws will be forced to get 161.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
