Description
WITNESS:
May 1. 1928. 1,668,474
VM M.VVELLS COMBINATION TOOL Filed March 10 1924 ATTORNEY Patented May 1, 1928.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM. M. WELLS, OF CARROLL, IOW'L COMBINATION TOOL.
Application filed March 10, 1924.. Serial No. 698,194.
This invention relates to improvements in tools, and has for an object the provlsion of a tool which includes a pair of pliers, a pin puller, and a wrench.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character which is simple in construction, convenient in use, and which is especially adapted for use in restricted areas or places ordinarily hard to reach.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and
pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a tool construeted in accordance with the invention,
Fig. 2 is an edge View of the same,
Fig. 3 is an end view, and
Fig. 4- is a section on the line 4- 1 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail 2 wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention as constructed comprises a pair of members 10, each of which includes a jaw 11 and a handle 12. The members are connected by means of a pivot pin 13 which is carried by one member and which passes through a slot or opening 14: provided in the other member, whereby the members may be adjusted laterally in a manner well known in tools of a similar nature.
The jaws 11 each includes a laterally right-angularly extending offset portion 15, whose opposed meeting faces 16 are relatively wide so that when the tool is used after the manner of the ordinary pliers, a
wide gripping or engaging surface is provided. In addition, the jaws have their opposed faces provided with transversely extending substantially semicircular grooves which form an opening 17 for the reception of a cotter-pin or like element 18. This provides convenient means for gripping and pulling a cotter-pin. The innerface, that is, the face of the jaws adjacent the handles, is recessed as indicated at 19 so as to provide room for the head of a key or other element, permitting the jaws to be tightly gripped upon saidkey or element.
The outer ends of the jaws 15 are provided with angularly arranged recesses 20, which, as shown in Fig. 1 form a nut-receiving socket. The socket formed by the jaws .is at the extreme end of the tool, thereby allowing the tool to be used in places otherwise inaccessible. The tool may thus be used after the manner of the ordinary pliers, as a cotter-pin puller, or as a socket wrench.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions, and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is t e A tool consisting of a pair of pivotally united elements, corresponding adjacent end portions of both elements merging into laterally extending complemental opposed jaws the opposed faces of which have angular recesses therein, which, when the opposed jaws are together, form a rectangular socket for engagement with a key or the like for turning the same, the socket being located at the extreme end of the tool, the rear portions of corresponding side faces of the jaws being chambered out causing a cavity to be formed at a point beyond and as a continuation of the socket, making room for the reception of the head of such key, the opposite extending ends of the two .members merging into handles, whereby the members of the tool can be operative toward and'from each other for manipulating the jaws. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
WILLIAM M. WELLS.
