Application filed. January 5, 1926. Serial No. 79,469.
My invention relates to hammers of the claw type, and a purpose of my invention is the provlsionof an attachment therefor by whichthe hammer is converted into another. form of tool'such as a hatchet or chisel, and without in any way modifying the present construction of claw hammers. It is also a purpose of my invention to provide a'tool .attachmentof the above de scribed character which is extremely simple,
inexpensive, and "durable in construction,
- capable of being readily applied to and removed from a hammer, and which when in applied position utilizes the claw of the hammer to firmly secure position thereon.
'A further purpose of my invention is 'the' provision of a tool attachment which is applicable to I claw/hammers having either curved or straight claws,- the construction,
of the attachment being such as to accommodate either curved or straight claws and in either adaptation to effectively secure the attachment to the claw of the hammer so as to. permit of the useof the tool as intended. I will, describe only three forms of tool attachments for hammers embodying my invention, and will. then point out the novel features thereof in claim-s.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a view showing in top plan one form of'tool attachment embodying my invention in applied position to a hammer;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the attachment and hammer in side elevation;
Fig. 3 is a sectional viewtaken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 5
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view showing the tool attachment illustrated in the preceding views; I
Fig. 5 is a view showing the same tool attachment in end elevation;
Fig. 6 is a view showing in perspective another form of tool attachment embodying my invention;
Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view ofthe attachment shown in Fig. 6; i
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a third form of tool attachment embodying my invention;
Fig. 9 is a bottom plan view ment shown in Fig. 8; and
Fig. 10 is a view showing the tool at tachment of Fig.9 in applied position to a hammer.
of the attachitself in operative Similar reference characters refer to similar parts in each of the views of the draw- I ing.
' Referring specifically to the drawing, my 7 invention in the embodiment shown in Figs.
1 to 5, inclusive, comprises a body of 'steel or other suitable material having a blade portion 15'beveled at its-freeend-toprovidea cutting edge 16, and an attaching portion 17 adapted for engagement with the claw of a claw hammer for securing the blade to the hammer. In the present embodiment of my invention, the attaching portion: is so constructed as to' be applicable to either a curved. or. substantially straight claw hammer, and to this end such portion is provided with a], substantially fiat and downwardly inclined face 18, from which projects a wedge member 19'. At its pointof connection with the face 18 the wedge member increases in thickness from its forward 3 end rearwardly in the direction of the blade 15, and theblade 15 is formed with grooves 20 to effect a continuationof the wedge 19 to accommodate the claws ofa straight claw hammer. The surface 18 provides a bearing surface for the claws of the hammer,
while the wedge 19 is interposed between thev the hammer throughthe handle in the usual manner the attachment can be used as a hatchet. -Although the locking of the attachment to the claw of the hammer is sufficiently secure to prevent accidental displacement thereof during use, it nevertheless permits the ready removal of the attachment from the hammer by a slight outward tapping of the attachment so as to release the wedge 19 from between the claws of the hammer.
a The tool attachment shown in Fig. 4 at opposite sides of the attaching portion is provided vwith enlargements 21 having curved faces 22, and the wedge 19 is pro} jected beyond the enlargements to'form a wedge for attaching the device to a hammer having curved claws as illustrated in Fig. 2. In the applied position of the attachment to a curved claw hammer, that portion of the wedge beyond the enlargements is interposed between the claws of'the hammer and so as to have wedging engagement therewith, the outer surfaces of the claws having bearing engagement on the portion of the surface of the face 18 and with the faces In this manner the surfaces operate as abut ments in amanner to cause proper wedging engagement of the wedge 19 with the claws of the hammer so as to elfectively secure the attachment to the hammer,
Referring now to Figs. 6 and 7, I have here shown another form of tool attachment embodying my invention comprising a body constructed to form a blade 23 having a cutting edge 24; and forming a chisel blade. The attaching portion of the body is constructed to provide an arcuate face or surface 25 from whlch PI'OJBCtS a Wedge 26 1ncreasingin thickness from its point of connection wlth the attachlng portion from its forward end inwardly and from its at' tached side outwardly to its'free edge.
- wedge constructed in this manner is adapted for wedging engagement between the claws of a curved claw hammer such as lllustrated in Fig. 2, the outer surface of the ner of a chisel.
Referring now to Figs. 8 and 9, I have here shown a third form of tool attachment embodying my invention comprising a body having a blade portion 27 formed with a cutting edge 28 and an attaching por- Although I have only shown and described: three forms of my tool attachment for hammers embodying my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention and the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A tool attachment for claw hammers, having means adapted for engagement with the curved claws of a hammer, and means adapted for engagement with the straight claws of a hammer, both of said means being operable with the respective claw to secure the attachment in operative position on the hammer. I
2. A tool attachment for claw hammers, comprising a body having a wedge adapted to engage in the cleft between the claws of the hammer and provided with surfaces extending respectively to points beyond the sides of the wedge and adapted to frictionally bear against adjacent faces of the claws at points to the sides of said cleft, the com- LESTER W.
