Description

UNITED STATES vPaiE1\rr OFFICE.
ADoLrHUs r. EDDY, or BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
To @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, ADoLrrrUs F. EDDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful lmprovenients in Combination-Tools, of which tl following is a specification.
rThis invention relates to a combination tool and particularly to a tool for pulling nails.
@ne of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple, substantial and cheaply manufactured combination tool, useful for various purposes but particularly adapted for use in conjunction with a claw hammer when pulling nails, said tool permitting nails to be removed without bending the same, enlarging the nail holes or otherwise mutilating the surface or material into which the nails have been driven.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination tool which may serve various uses; for instance, that of a carpenters square, a hammer, a foot rule, a wrench, a nail gage, an anvil, a crowbar or prying tool, and other uses, as hereinafter to be described.
Further objects will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more'fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which-f Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tool;
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation, showing the use of the tool when pulling nails; and
Fig. d is a cross-section on line i- 4, Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail, and particularly to Fig. l, it will be seenfthat the tool consists of a head member A and a pair of triangular-shaped plate sections 2 and 3. The tool is comparatively long and narrow and is preferably constructed of cast steel, malleable iron, or the like. The plate sections 2 and 3 are therefore formed integral with the headA and are in this instance interspaced to form a centrally disposed channel 4t. rlhis channel extends from kthe pointed end 5 of the plate sections up to the head member A, thus separating the same, as shown in Figs. l and 2, to permit the plates to straddle a nail when this is to be removed, as will hereinafter be described. The head A is approximately square in shape Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct. 19, 1920.
Application filed April 1G, 1919.
Serial No. 290,389.
when viewed from the side, but it is`otherwise narrow so as to reduce the weight of the tool in general as much as possible. The head is provided with a handle opening A', an anvil surface 6, and a pair of grooves 7 and 8 which are employed for the purpose of straightening bent nails. The plate sections '2 and 3 are reinforced or ribbed along the edges, as shown at 9, and the web sections of the plates are provided with openings Vwhich permit the tool to be used as a wrench;
for instance, the web formed in the plate section 3. is provided with square openings shown at l0 to permit the tool to be applied when removing square-shaped nuts, while the web section of the plate 2 is provided with hexagonal openings to permit the removal of lieXagon nuts, the openings in the respective web sections being graduated to lit nuts of varying sizes. The base portion of the tool, shownv in Fig. 2, is provided with a foot rule scale, graduated in inches and. y I fractions thereof, while the inclined face` v shown at ll is provided with a nail geen@S shown at 2p, 3p, etc., Fig. l.
`While the tool may be used for various 4 nail, thereby permitting it to be removed without bending the saine and without enlarging the nail hole or otherwise mutilating the material into which the nail has been driven. The inclined plane presented for the reception of the claw-hammer, when this is used,ris so arranged that nails of practically any size maybe removed; for instance, when pulling a nail it is obvious that. the lower pointed end of the tool will first be employed and that the toolswill be advanced under the hammer whenever a new hold is required.
`The base section and the end of *thev head A forms a right angle which permits the Vtool to be employed as a square. The openings in the web sections permit it to vbe used as a wrench, while the grooves 7 and 8 pern mit the tool to be used when straightening bent nails.
The'tool may otherwise be used as a crow- 1. A tool for the purpose specied com-` prising a square head With a pair of triangular thin plates extending therefrom and terminating in thin edges, the sides of said plates being disposed in a common plane and similar edges thereof disposed in a common plane. l
2. A tool of the character described comprising a square head with a pair of thin plates extending therefrom, said plates having the shape of a right triangle and their ends terminating in thin edges, the sides of said plates being disposed in a Common plane and similar edges thereof disposed in a common plane.
3. A device of the character described com* prising a head member and a pair of triangular shaped plates forming an extension thereof, said plates being interspaced and extending parallel from end to end, said plates having exterior parallel surfaces forming a continuation of the sides of the head.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
