Variable, - speed epicyclic gearing .-Gearing for aero engines yielding two different reduced speeds is operated by applying brakes alternatively to two loose sun gears f, g. Stepped planet gears i<8>, i<9> carried by the driven shaft e mesh with these sun gears and with an internallytoothed gear d<5> fast upon the engine shaft d. The brakes k<7>, k<6> are of the multipleplate type and are housed in a fixed drum k. They are applied by lateral movement of a ring k<3> between them effect-ed by means of inclined slots k<4>, Fig. 2.
