Abstract

204,830. Owen, A. E. Aug. 15, 1922. Closure members.-A valve of the kind described in Specification 171,510 is modified so that one valve member is lifted by engagement with the other valve member. The valve member 2 is formed with a, part 16 which slides withir. the valve member 3, and the two valves co-operate with seatings 4, 5. The member 3 is mounted on the spindle 7 between a shoulder' 8 and a nut 9, and the member 2 is free to slide within the member 3 to an extent determined by the distance between the lower edge of the ribs 18 and part 15 or the ridge 22 and lower edge of the member 2. The diameter of the member 3 is less than that of the member 2, so that the seat 4 may be formed on the valve casing 1, without the necessity for a detachable seating to allow withdrawal of the valves. The space within both valves is open to steam pressure, so that the valve 3 is balanced and the valve 2 nearly so. The valve 3 opens first, and the valve 2 then becomes balanced before it is opened by the continued upward movement of the spindle. Modifications are described in which a detachable side plate is provided on the part 1 for withdrawal of the valve 3, and ir. which the device is adapted as a stop valve in a complete casing.
