Abstract

202,339. Mills, C. H., English, W. E., and Hannan, J. R. Feb. 24, 1922. Smoke-tube superheaters.-In a smoke-tube superheating element having two or more tubes connected with one another at the return end of a single tube, the tubes are so formed and arranged as to divide the furnace gases into a few streams of sector or like shape section. Flattened tubes c, c<1>, Figs. 1 and 3, arranged radially in a smoke tube below a tube a are connected to the end of the tube by a cap or torpedo end b. The flattened tubes are formed with reduced circular ends. The cross sectional area of the tubes is about one-fifth of the cross sectional area of the smoke-tube. Three flattened tubes f, f<1>, f<2>, Fig. 4, may be arranged around and connected to the return end of a central tube e. The three flattened tubes may be replaced by three small tubes of circular section. The sides of the flattened tubes may be curved inwardly.
