Abstract
197,356. Brown, D., and Knowles, S. Dec. 13, 1921. Turning-gear. - In a starting-device in which reduction gear is employed, the manipulation of the starting-handle brings the starting shaft simultaneously into engagement with the engine shaft and into operative connection with the starting handle through the reduction gear. In the form shown, the starting-handle E is rotatable but not slidable on a starting-shaft D sliding in bearings d, d' in a box b. A countershaft G carries a gear-wheel G<1> permanently in gear with a pinion D' on the starting shaft and a wheel G<2> normally out of gear with a wheel E<2> secured to the starting-handle. Axial movement of the handle E brings the shaft D into engagement with the engine shaft and the wheels E<2>, G<2> into gear.
