Guards and protectors.-A variable-speed gear casing 22 constructed to accommodate a driving- shaft 1, Fig. 1, and a parallel countershaft 2 has a large opening at one end closed by a cover 18 carrying bearings 20, 21 for one end of each shaft. The shaft 1 and members mounted thereon can be withdrawn throughout this opening. The upper part of the casing 22 is provided with an integral projecting flange 10, Fig. 3, for securing the casing to the body of a motor-vehicle. There is also an inspection opening 6, the detachable cover of which carries bearings for the shaft 5 of starting-gear. There is an oil inlet 13 near the top of the casing, and an opening 14, Fig. 1, near the base through which the level of the lubricant in the casing may be seen. There is an oil discharge opening 16. Specifications 140,336 and 142,030 [both in Class 80 (ii), Gearing, Variablespeed &c.], and 149,863, [Class 7 (v), Internalcombustion engines, Starting &c.], are referred to.
