Abstract
195,964. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Prince, D. C.). April 8, 1922, [Convention date]. Vacuum or low-pressure apparatus, arrangements of.-A discharge device such as a thermionic valve for producing oscillations comprises a cathode, a control grid, an anode, and a second grid interposed between the control grid and the anode and connected with an oscillatory circuit at such a point that the potential of the grid varies in accordance with, and at a slightly lower value than the potential of the anode. Secondary electrons emitted from the anode are prevented from reaching the control grid by the positive potential on the second grid. In one arrangement, the second grid 5, Fig. 1. between the control grid 3 and the anode 4 is connected with a point 12 on the inductance which, with a capacity 7, forms an oscillatory circuit between the anode and the control grid, an intermediate point 8 being connected with the cathode 2. A source of energy 9 is connected between the anode and cathode. A choke 10 prevents the passage of high frequency currents through the source 9, and a condenser 11 prevents the direct current from being short-circuited through the inductance. A coil 13 in the work circuit is coupled with the inductance. In another arrangement, the second grid 5, Fig. 2, is connected with one end of the inductance 14, the other end of which is connected through the source 9 with the cathode, the anode 4 being connected with an intermediate point 16. Back coupling may be provided by a condenser 7, and, in addition, by a winding 15 in the circuit of the control grid. Secondary emission of electrons from the anode may be prevented by the use of a black body as the anode, or by providing a rough surface on the anode, or by the use of a material such as copper or nickel for the anode. The Specifications as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of the valve for rectifying. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
