Abstract
16,711. Keith, J., and Keith, G. Nov. 26. [Cognate Applications, 18,072/15, 3181/16, and 6898/16.] Actuating; pressure - regulating valves.-In a gaseous-fuel furnace, oven, or the like in which the gas and air or oxygen are supplied by means of an injector, to form a combustible mixture, one of the constituents of the mixture is injected to induce the flow of the other constituent, the flow of the induced constituent being controlled by the pressure in the mixing- tube of the injector or in or beyond the furnace, or the induced fluid may be maintained at atmospheric pressure. As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, gas supplied by a pipe 5 is controlled by a pivoted valve 3 connected through a lever 8 and helical spring 7 with a diaphragm 2, preferably disposed in a vertical plane. Where the diaphragm is not disposed in a vertical plane, suitable means may be employed for counterbalancing its weight or part of its weight so as to produce a slight preponderance in favour of closing the valve. The space at the back of the diaphragm is connected by a pipe 9 to the Venturi tube of the injector, the end of the pipe 9 being arranged, as shown, flush with the internal wall of the Venturi tube, or it may project into the interior of the tube with its mouth facing "up-stream" or "down-stream" according to whether it is intended to establish pressure above or below that of the mixture in the tube. The pipe 9 may be connected to the furnace or chimney, or where the furnace discharges directly to the atmosphere, the back of the diaphragm may be subject to atmospheric pressure. Where the induced constituent of the mixture is preheated, a piston, bell, or the like may be substituted for the diaphragm.
