Abstract

12,432. Hooker, W. June 18. Lighting buildings &c., systems of; incandescent gas and vapour lamps.-In illuminating - apparatus of the kind described in Specification No. 8942, A.D. 1900, consuming a mixture of gas or hydrocarbon vapour and air, the quantity of the mixture produced is made dependent upon the number of burners in operation, while the strength of the mixture is unchanged, by the combination of a hydraulic air-compressing device a, b, c with an expansible chamber g, g<1> arranged to control the regulating - valves. When the expansible chamber or bell g<1> occupies the position shown in Fig. 1, the valve in the water pipe d is held open by the engagement of the spring-actuated or equivalent lever k with the pivoted catch k<1>. Water from the nozzle c then carries air down the tube b to the water-sealed air-compressing chamber a, whence it passes by a pipe f to the bell g', the flow of the fluid along the pipe f being determined by the valve f <1>, which is closed by means of the connection i on the ascent of the bell, and is opened on the descent of the bell by a weight f<3> on the lever f<2>. The ascent of the bell g<1> acting through the connection l<1>, l also releases the lever k from the pivoted catch k<1>, and closes the water supply valve j, which is re-opened on the descent of the bell by the depression of the lever k by the stirrup l<2>. When the apparatus is used with coal or like gas, the gas supply pipe communicates with the pipe b, so that the gas is carried with the air by the water jet into the chamber a, a gas valve, actuated similarly to the valve f<1>, being arranged in the gas-supply pipe. When, however, the apparatus is used with the carburetting-apparatus m, the proportion of the air traversing the pipe f which passes through the carburetter m is determined by the valves g, n, n<1>. The carburetting- apparatus, with similar connections, may be arranged on the pipe h instead of on the pipe f. When the burners are not in use, the bell g<1> rises and closes the valves j, f <1>. Sufficient air or carburetted air is then accumulated in the bell g<1> to permit of the burners being re-lit as required, its escape through the pipes f, b being prevented by the non-return valve p.
