Abstract
8547. Smith, J. April 9. Valves controlled from a distance.-When the pressure of the gas in the main E is varied, the gas supply from the main to the burner pipe G and to the pilot-jet pipe P is controlled by a float F. While the burners are alight, the pressure of the gas is such that the float occupies the position shown in the Figure, gas from the main E descending a pipe F<1> on the float to the open lower end of the burner pipe G, and the valve i of the pilot-jet pipe P being closed. To extinguish the burners, the pressure of the gas in the main is lowered. Water or other liquid then passes from the larger chamber A to the chamber B, the float rises, the lower end of the pipe G is closed by a leather or other seating H which is moistened by oil or its equivalent in the cup h, and the valve i to the pilot-jet is opened. The position of the seating H on the float F allows of the employment of a float of comparatively large size, and the guide-rod J may be utilized to operate a second pilot-jet valve.
