Abstract

8894. Gertz, H. R. June 16. Spray carburettors.-The fuel nozzle, which is provided with an internal co-axial air tube, projects axially into the interior of a-rotary plug cock forming the mixing-chamber, and the air, fuel, and mixture are heated by exhaust gases, the flow of which is adjustable. The carburettor comprises an air-inlet passage 1, Fig. 1, and a mixture-outlet passage 6 formed integral with an exhaust chamber 2, near the inlet 3 of which is a hinged valve which can deflect the hot gases toward or away from the fuel passage 9, the upper nozzle-portion 5 of which projects into the interior 21 of the plug cock 22. The plug cock has a double-conical passage, shown in Fig. 7, the part 27, controlling the air-inlet side, being provided with a supplementary air inlet 26 fitted with a ball valve. The nozzle, shown to a larger scale in Fig. 4, comprises an inner air-tube 11 surrounded by the fuel space 9, the air and fuel passing through orifices 19 in a @@ead 17 which can be adjusted to va@y the fuel passage 20. Air enters the tube 11 through orifices 13, which can be a justed by the screwed sleeve 16 to admit the correct amount of air to keep the engine running slowly If the engine speed should increase, additional air is admitted through an aperture 15 controlled by a ball valve 14. In a modified construction, Fig. 5, the carburettor body is not cast integral with the exhaust pipe 28, but is seated thereon by a saddle-shaped portion 24, fuel being supplied from the float chamber through a passage 25 ; and a modification of this construction is described in which the fuel conduit passes through the exhaust pipe.
