Abstract
27,573. Southey, A. W. Dec. 1. Spray carburettors.-Air is drawn transversely across a coarse spray of fuel produced by gases under pressure. The fuel is of low flash-point and the heat necessary for its vaporization is supplied by the atmospheric air ; this heating, in conjunction with a baffling-device, prevents drops of liquid from being drawn into the induction pipe. Fuel entering the nozzle H by the aperture H' is sprayed in excess by gas under pressure obtained from one of the engine cylinders. This gas passes a non-return valve L and enters the carburettor at F<1>. The coarse spray of fuel is then traversed by'air entering by the flap valve D. The flow of mixture is controlled by.the throttle C which also controls extra-air ports C<1> and, in addition, acts as a baffle and expansion chamber to cause deposition of drops of fuel, which may return by the passage N.
