  • Control Of The Air-Fuel Ratio Of Carburetors (AREA)

Abstract

7626. Thrutchley, W. F. April 1. Spray carburettors.-A carburettor comprises a tubular casing g provided with an inlet port q for primary air, port m for the mixture, and a tapered circumferential air port p for admitting supplementary air at high engine speeds, in combination with a tubular throttle valve h having an outlet port i and a tapered circumferential air-port k, the tapered air-ports p, k being adapted to be adjusted circumferentially in relation to each other so as to vary the amount of air admitted and the time at which they register when the throttle valve is moved axially. In the form shown, the central boss h<1> of the valve is provided with a squared portion mounted in a spider s which is operated by a Bowden or other control to produce the circumferential adjustment of the air-ports. When the throttle valve is closed, air can pass to the engine through holes 18 in the spider s. The amount of fuel admitted from the float-chamber b through jet holes 6 is controlled by an adjustable tapered pin 2. The fuel-supply tube y is surrounded by a well 8 in which fuel collects; at starting, air is caused to pass through the fuel in the well and through sinuous passages formed between the well and a stationary tubular member 9. In a modification the central boss of the throttle valve is provided with a threaded portion and a sleeve and lock-nut for effecting the circumferential adjustment.
