6289. Biglow, J. H. April 27. Water-tube boilers. - The casing 1 encloses the elements of a water-tube boiler having a front transverse steam and water drum 11 connected by upright legs 6 to the side manifolds 3 at the level of the firegrate 5. A number of spaced small tubes 12, bent as shown, form the sides and crown of the fire-box, and are connected to manifolds while small tubes 15 rise vertically from the rear manifold 4 and are then arranged as shown in Fig. 2, and deliver to the bottom of the drum 11. Feedwater enters the top of the boiler and passes through the tubes 9 to manifolds having downflow tubes 8. A modified form is described in which a single top manifold is connected by inclined down-tubes to the bottom side manifolds.
