Abstract

3149. Zweigbergk, T. von, and Zweigbergk, G. von. Feb. 26. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises a train having a member such as F kept from turning backwards by a ratchet clutch F<4>, and a train having a member D<4> controlled by a dynamo D', the armature of which may be short - circuited progressively to produce an adjustable braking effect. A driving - shaft A carries a gear A<2> meshing with planetary gears E, which mesh with the gear F. The gears E are supported on a carrier B' secured to a driven shaft B. The carrier B' also supports gears G', G<2> turning together on spindles G, which make connexion with a flange member D<5>. The gears G<1> mesh with the gears E, and the gears G<2> with the gear D<4>, which is connected by a hollow shaft D to the armature of the dynamo D'. When the dynamo is opencircuited. the gear F is held by the clutch F<4>, and the shaft B is driven through the train A<2>, E, F at low speed. When the dynamo circuit is closed through a resistance which is gradually cut out, the shaft B is driven through the train A<2>, E, G', G<2>, D' at a speed which increases until the gear D' is brought nearly to rest. A top-speed solid drive is effected when the shaft D is connected to the member D<5> through a multiple-disk clutch H. An engine driving the shaft A may be started by using the dynamo as a motor deriving current from a storage battery. The shaft A may be turued either at the same speed as the armature or at a different speed.
