Abstract

1057. Baker, W. Jan. 22. Breech actions, drop-down barrel; firing-appliances applicable generally.-Consists in arranging the firing-spring of a drop-down gun in a cylindrical extension of the firing-pin, and in providing an externally operated lever by which the spring is compressed, the lever being automatically released when the gun is unlocked. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the spring bears, through the intermediary of a ball i, against a lever f, which is pivoted to the main plate g, passes through slots in the cylinder extension b, and is connected at its outer end to a slide-piece h. The lever f is connected by means of a link and a compression spring k to the locking-bolt l, which is actuated by means of the usual hand-lever m. To comprees the spring c, the slide h is pushed forward until its hooked end engages a spring catch n in the bolt lever m. The gun may then be fired. When the bolt lever is operated to permit the gun to be opened, the slide h is released, and the spring k on the locking-bolt l forces the lever f back to retract the firing-pin into the cocked portion, but with the firing-spring c uncompressed, as shown in Fig. 1. A modification is described in which the spring-actuating lever f is provided with an external extension at its lower end adjacent to the trigger instead of at its upper end. The catch for retaining the lever in the operative position may be liberated by the bolt when the gun is opened.
