Abstract

168,396. Atkinson, H. R. May 29, 1920. Ordnance, muzzle-loading; breech mechanism. -The firing-pin of a muzzle-loading Stokes mortar is made operable as a percussion striker by a slip-lock mechanism. but may be locked in the protruded position so that it functions in the usual manner when a projectile is dropped into the gun. For firing at low elevations, the striker is held retracted by a safety catch during the leading operation, and is then released by a sliplock mechanism operated by a hand-lever. Fig. 2 is a vertical section and Fig. 3 a sectional under-plan of the base-cap a of a mortar embodying one form of the slip-lock firing-mechanism. The movable firing-pin c is shown locked in the protruded position by a spring-controlled pin k. When this pin is withdrawn, the firing-pin may be retracted by a cocking-lever h, through the medium of a pawl l, against the action of the spring d. A safety-catch n engages a notch in the firing-pin at half-cock, so that the mortar may be loaded with safety. When the cocking-lever is fully operated, a vertically-sliding pin n' is pushed upwards by the lever and lifts the safety catch, and the pawl l escapes through a notch in the lever permitting the spring d to actuate the firing- pin.
