Abstract

283,928. Verney-Carron et Cie. Jan. 20, 1927, [Convention date]. Breech actions, sliding breech-block; barrels; stocks.-A smallarm of single-barrelled or doublebarrelled type is made with a stationary topplate 11, F´g. 1, over which slides a breech-block 2'1 provided with a number of rotatable heads 24 for locking the breech-block in the closed position, these heads being incapable of longitudinal motion relatively to the breech-block. The heads 24 have shanks 23 formed with curved grooves 29 engaged by studs 33, Fig. 4, on a longitudinally sliding member 25, which is operated through a link 36 by a lever 27 pivoted to the breech-block at 39, a spring 35 being interposed between the back of the member 25 and an abutment on the breech-block. A roller 41 at the end of a short arm 40 rigid with the lever 27 bears on the plate 11 and holds the lever in the open position until the breech-block is moved forward to the closed position. The roller 41 then comes over a slot in the plate 11, and allows the lever 27 to be swung down. This rotates the heads 24 and makes teeth 30 thereon interlock with corresponding teeth in the socket-piece 3, to which the barrels are secured. The reverse movement of the lever 27 unlocks the breech and allows the breech-block to be pulled back. An extractor 8 is simultaneously retracted by a lug 42 on the breechblock, which lug also limits the movement of the breech-block by engagement with a fixed stop. The retraction of the breech-block also swings the firing hammers 16 back to cock in engagement with triggers 44, 45 at the same time compressing the springs 52. The hammers may be locked or unlocked by a cam 54 adjusted by a small external lever and held in place by a spring 55. If the hammers are unlocked, a pull on a trigger releases the corresponding hammer, which swings and strikes a firing pin 32, Fig. 2, slidably mounted in the rotatable head 24. A slot 31 in the rear end of the head 24 allows the hammer to reach the firing pin only if the head has been fully rotated to complete the locking of the breech-block. The stud 33 which operates the rotatable head also serves to limit the longitudinal movement of the firing pin. The socket-piece 3 to which the barrels are screwed has a boss 9, which fits in a recess 14 in the plate 11 and is secured to the front part of the stock by a bolt 12 provided with a handle 13. The two barrels 1, 2, Fig. 7, are connected together throughout their whole length by a bridge-piece 4. The triggers and firing hammers are carried bv the cheeks of a bottom plate 19, which is interlocked at its forward end with a lug 18 depending from the top plate 11, and is secured at its rear end to the rear part of the stock together with the top plate 11 by a bolt 20. The trigger-guard 43 is attached to the bottom plate 19.
