Abstract

616,595. Machine guns. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and HIGSON, P. R. Sept. 17, 1946, No. 27891. [Class 92 (ii)] The breech mechanism of an automatic gun having two barrels is so constructed that when one breech block is locked in the firing position the other breech block is free to recoil to permit the loading of the corresponding barrel, so that ammunition can be fired alternately from the two barrels. In the construction shown, breech-blocks 5, 6 are associated respectively with barrels 3, 4 and with sears 50, 51, operated by a single trigger 52. The breech-blocks may be retracted by handles 7, 8 against the action of springs 9, 10. Each breechblock has an inwardly-directed portion against which can bear a pivoted locking lever 12 whose free end 17 is guided in a slot 18 in the bottom plate 1 of the breech casing. An island cam 21 of triangular shape is provided on the lower face of the lever and with this cam co-operates a pintle 22 which passes through the plate 1, is secured to a plate 24 and is mounted for sliding movement against the action of a spring on a rod 27 pivoted on the baseplate 1. The slot 34 through which the pintle passes is of triangular form and is located in a recess 31 in which floats a hammer bar 30. Action.-If the unlocked breech-block 6, Fig. 1, is retracted by hand from the position shown, it engages the bar 30 which rocks about its other end in the recess 31. The bar 30 in turn moves the pintle 22 backwards against the action of spring 28A on the rod 27, the pintle first riding along the side of the cam 21 and then being swung anticlockwise, Fig. 1, by the bar. In its rearmost position the breechblock engages with a recess 30A in the upper face of the hammer bar. When the breechblock is released by the trigger, a round having been inserted in the barrel 4, the pintle under the action of spring 28A moves forwardly bearing on the other side of the cam and thus swinging the lever 12 clockwise, the pintle serving also to return the hammer bar to the position shown. Thus, when the breech-block 6 reaches its forward position it is locked by the lever 12 and its firing pin is struck by the hammer bar. On firing, the gases actuate a gas piston 42, which drives to the rear a member 43 which forces a member 45 to swing about its bearing point 48 on the now locked breechblock 6. The other end of the member 45 thus drives the breech-block 5 to the rear and the cycle is repeated. The member 43 also serves to actuate linkwork 64, 63, serving to oscillate the feed slide 60 of a cartridge feed mechanism adapted to feed cartridges from a single belt to both barrels.
