Cylinders, construction of and cooling.- Cylinder heads of internal-combustion engines are formed with inner and outer jackets cooled by streams of different character. Fig. 1 shows the lower cylinder-end of a double-acting engine. A stream of water of low temperature, small area, and high velocity enters the inner jacket at d and, passing over the heated wall p, issues at e. The outer jacket is cooled by a stream of larger area, lower velocity, and, if desired, of higher temperature. The water may circulate in series through both jackets, passing through the partition o at a point remote from the entrance d. Baffles may be arranged in the inner jacket to keep the stream of approximately constant area, and the height of the inner jacket may be diminished at points of excessive heating, for instance around the. exhaust valve. The two portions of the head may be cast separately and bolted together.
