Abstract

Gas and like engines.-Relates mainly to the arrangement and construction of the cylinders .and water jackets of two-stroke-cycle and other doubleacting engines. In Fig. 2, the cylinder 10 is shown with a ring of exhaust ports 11, surrounded by an air belt 15, at its centre, and with end cover-plates 16 having g concave deflecting-surfaces 16<b>, Fig. 3, against which the scavenging air impinges as it enters through the' admission valves 31. Surrounding the cower-plates 16, and fixed to the cooling-jackets 17 and the cross-head guides 41, 42, are cooling-chambers 18 having flexible closing plates 19 which allow of the expansion of the cylinder 10. The cooling-jackets 17 may be cast in one with the casting forming the air belt 15. Cooling-water is admitted to the chamber surrounding the cylinder covers, through circulating- pipes 21, 22, and passes by way of the pipes 23, 24 to the cylinder jackets 17, finally leaving by the pipes 25, 26. Ports 18<1> are provided in the jacket wall 19<1> to facilitate the circulation. Valves and valve-gear governing.-The fluidoperated valve, shown in Fig. 3,' surrounding the piston-rod is described in Specification No. 20,964, A.D. 1905, together with the . mechanism for controlling the mixing-valves 38. Lubricating.-The cylinders are lubricatedby oil injected through pipes 20 passing through the water jacket.
