Abstract

26,744. Welch, J. A. Dec. 10. Gas and like engines, valves and valve-gear for, and igniting in. A rotary-disk valve 5 having three ports, for admission, exhaust, and electric ignition, respect i v e l y, w o r k s against a fixed valve-plate 2 having ports leading to the working cylincers, there being one such port for each cylinder. The valve is driven by skew gearing 9 at half the speed of the crank-shaft, and controls a four-stroke cycle in each cylinder. The valve spindle 6 runs in ball bearings 10, and the upper part of it is tubular so as to form a number of axial passages 15 for the explosive mixture from the induction pipe 13. In order to cool the exhaust, the mixture passes to the admission port 11 by a passage 20 around the exhaust port 12. A sparking-plug 16 is mounted in the ignition port of the valve and is connected by one or more wires 18 passing through the hollow valve spindle; and by a ball-and-socket contact 19, to the ignition system. The valve is cooled by a water-jacketed casing 21, which is connected to the water-jackets of the cylinders by water-tight joints formed with rubber rings 22. The invention may be applied to a single-cylinder engine. According to the Provisional Specification, the valve may be a rotating cylindrical or conical plug.
