Abstract

27,227. Howard, H. J. Dec. 15. Gas and like eng i n e s, valves and valve-gear for. A separate admission or exhaust valve of the rotary or oscillating conical plug type is formed as a hollow conical shell B, communicating with the working cylinder by longitudinal slots A and open at its larger end to the admission or exhaust pipe, which is arranged axially with regard to the valve. Any even number of slots A may be used, and when the valve is rotated the speed of rotation varies according te the number of ports in the valve and in its casing, and, according to the cycle on which the engine works. The taper of the valve is such that the pressure of the explosion tends to force the plug outwards so as to prevent seizing. A light spring on the valve spindle keeps the valve spindle to its seat. A single valve may be used for the exhaust of two cylinders cast together, a separate valve of the same type being used for admission. An exhaust valve of this type may be used together with the combined piston and admission valve described in Specification No. 21,297, A.D. 1908. According to the Provisional Specification, a stiff spring is-interposed in the actuating mechanism for an oscillating valve of this type, in order to prevent damage if the valve should seize.
