Abstract

191,335. Poole, H. J., and Beddington, C. June 9, 1922. Vacuum closures &c.-Relates to a method of evacuating and sealing glass jars and the like in which the evacuation is effected by a pump after the closure has been placed in position, and takes place through an aperture in the closure with a closing piece which lifts off its seat to permit the evacuation of the air. According to the invention, the closing piece is positively urged against its seat by mechanical means. The cover B is placed on the jar A which has a packing-ring A<1>. An aperture D through which the evacuation takes place is formed in a recess E in the cover which accommodates a cap G resting on a luting. ring F. The recess is formed with an annulus E' surrounding a ledge E so that the luting ring is pressed into the annulus when the cap is in the sealed position.
