Open fire places; smoke, preventing; grates.- In a smoke-consuming stove, range, &c., the fire space communicates with the chimney through a rear aperture normally filled by fuel on the grate, and side flues connect the upper part of the fire space with a chamber below the grate, the only connexion of such chamber with the chimney being through the grate. In the application of the invention to a domestic stove, Fig. 5, the rear opening r, normally filled by fuel, is connected by a flue p with the chimney, and the side flues u lead to a chamber y below the grate. In a modification, Fig. 9, there are front and rear grate bars x with a dead space between, the rear bars being directly below the flue p. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 3681/68.
