Smoke, consuming; grates; fire-covers.-The combustion products from the fire-place of a kitchen range or parlour grate are led downwards into a chamber which is formed in the space behind, beneath, and adjacent to the grate, and are there mixed so that the smoke is consumed before passing into the flues. Fig. 1 shows a convertible open-and-close kitchen range with such a chamber A comprising the space between the ovens C and behind the ash-pit and the grate B. The combustion products enter the chamber A principally through a wedgeshaped flue G, those descending from near the fire-cover H being rendered smokeless by the hot gases issuing from the perforations b<2> in the fire-back b<3>. Another part of the combustion products passes through channels formed by ribs h<1> on the underside of the fire-cover H, and thence through a flue c<3> to the chamber A. When the fire-cover H is drawn forwards over the fire, a flange on its rear end closes the entrance to the hood D; if the damper K<1> is then shut, all the combustion products descend to the chamber A. In a modification, the boiler E and hood D are omitted; the upper side of the boiler is replaced by a perforated plate, and the forward side of the boiler by an inclined imperforate slab forming with the fire-back b<3> a tapering chamber G like that shown in Fig. 1. The front surface of the ash-pit, in this modification, is inclined downwards from the rear edge of the grate bottom b<1> to the lower part of the range front, so as to enlarge the space A. The invention is shown in Fig. 7 as applied to an open fire-place. In this case the combustion products pass through the tapering chamber G to a chamber A enlarged by forming a depression Y in the hearth. A similar depression may be formed in the setting of ranges &c.
