Abstract

19,916. Allen, H. A. Sept. 7. Open fire-places.-In a downdraught fire-place, the combustion products pass downwards through the fire-grate b into the ash-pit, and thence backwards and forwards, or in either of these directions, or directly, into side flues a, and thence over the upper ends of the jambs f to the opening e leading to a chimney. The ash-pit has a forward extension c, which may form part of the hearth ; it is provided with baffles d for deflecting the combustion products, and with openings c', serving as boiling-holes, and draught regulators c'. A small space at the top edge of the fire brick &c. back g allows the gases rising from the fuel to pass direct to the chimney; or apertures may be made in the back g for the same purpose.
