Open fire-places.-The fire-back of an open fire-place is curved forward at the top, and is provided with openings b for the combustion products into which run grooves d, and also with ribs c between the openings. Notches h may also be formed in the edge of the fire-back if desired. When the fire is first lighted, the smoke &c. passes by slots K and a rear flue j to the chimney. Dampers N, L, simultaneously operated, control the passage through the openings b and the flue j. The damper N is pivoted and provided with a projection n which is engaged by a curved part m of the rod M, when it is pushed in, so as to close the damper. The rod M also operates the sliding damper L. The grate e may be carried in an horizontal slot P.
