Variable-speed toothed gearing adapted to drive, at equal ranges of speeds in both directions, cars or locomotives which run on rails comprises three parallel shafts a, b, c arranged longitudinally of the car. The shaft a driven from the engine is connected by gears e, f to the shaft b, so that the shafts a, b constantly turn at the same speed in opposite directions. The shaft c, which drives the two wheel axles of the car, is arranged symmetrically with respect to the shafts a, b, and carries fixed wheels p, q, r. The wheels p, q, rare geared alternatively to wheels g, h, i on the shaft a for driving the car one way at different speeds, and to wheels g<1>, h<1>, i<1> on the shaft b for driving the car the other way, in like manner. The alternatively-employed wheels may be adapted to slide into mesh on feathers on the shafts a, b, or may be constantly in mesh but loose and adapted to be connected to their shafts by sliding clutches.
