Abstract
21,125. Hilton, G. T., and Coppell, F. B., [trading as Hilton & Co.]. Oct. 7. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to toothed changespeed and reversing gearing of the face-wheel type, and comprises an arrangement devoid of sliding gears situated on one side only of the face-wheel axis. Bevel-pinions e, a<3>, Fig. 2, loose upon the driving-shaft A mesh constantly with toothed rings on the face of the driven face-wheel D. A bevelpinion g fast on a countershaft J meshes with a ring on the back of the wheel D. Spur-pinions o<1>, n<1> fast on the shaft A gear constantly with wheels o, n, loose on the shaft J, an idler m being arranged between the elements n', n for reversing. The highest and the middle speeds are effected by connecting either of the pinions e or a<3>, respectively, to the shaft A by a sliding double clutch h between them. For the low speed and the reverse, the spur reducing-gearing is brought into play by connecting either of the wheels o or n, respectively, to the shaft J by a second sliding double clutch i. In another arrangement a double reduction takes place through spur gearing and parallel shafts. Fig. 3 shows a form in which the parallel countershaft is dispensed with. The low-speed pinion g is also loose on the shaft A and is connected by an idler m to a fourth loose pinion n<1>. A sliding double clutch i on the shaft A between the pinions g and n<1> makes the required connexions.
