Abstract

209. Straight, W. J. Jan. 4. Spring wheels with continuous outer rigid ring and pneumatic cushions.-The cushion in a pneumatic hub consists of a stiff rubberedcanvas casing 20 of square section, split peripherally, and enclosing a pneumatic tube. Plates 29, 31, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, of dovetail section are riveted through the casing to internal washer-plates 38, and engage corresponding grooves in the hub 4 and a detachable bush 30 on the axle-box. Pivoted to the bush 30 are tangential bars 40, Fig. 4, which are pivoted to blocks 45, radially guided in grooves formed in plates 48 secured to the sides of the hub. The wheel body, cushion, and bush thus form a detachable entitv. Integral and detachable flanges on the axle-box overlap plates secured to the hub, and thin sheets of vulcanite are interposed to protect the casing from the action of the bars 40.
