The valve closes when the rib leaves the valve stem, the piston moving forward under the expansion of the compressed air &c. until the exhaust port 5<1> is uncovered. The piston is returned by a volute spring 25, when the back of the cylinder is placed in communication with the atmosphere by a hand-operated valve.
