Abstract
612,401. Lubricating. GRESHAM & CRAVEN, Ltd., and MARSH, G. C. May 27, 1946, No. 15971. [Class 12 (iii)] A lubricating system for the steam engines of locomotives comprises steam - operated atomizers for the oil with the steam admission valve opened under control of a vacuum provided by a pump driven by the locomotive and effective only while the. locomotive is in motion, the valve being closed by the steam pressure when the vacuum is released. With the vacuum effective, the stem f of a piston g actuates a spindle e which opens a pilot valve a and a main supply valve b, allowing pressure steam to pass through port n to the lubricant atomizers. The stem e has a valve portion h which engages a seating i so that an exhaust to atmosphere is closed whilst the device is in operation. When the vacuum is released, stearn pressure closes the admission valves a and b and opens valve h to give an exhaust to atmosphere via passage o. An air filter p may be applied to the cylinder of the vacuumoperated piston. The vacuum may be that of the brake system of the locomotive, or a separate vacuum pump may be used.
