Abstract

19,484. Goodridge, R. H. Aug. 31. Water-pressure engines.-.Gas or air compressors actuated by hydraulic engines, and particularly adapted for increasing the pressure of air or gas supplied to incandescent gas-lighting systems, are provided with special valve-gear. The Figure shows a compressor A, B. The hydraulic cylinder is formed by the hollow rod C of the piston B. The hydraulic piston-rod is also made hollow, and pressure fluid is fed from the pipe J through the port K to the space above the piston G, so raising the piston B until the tappet V abuts against a stop on the rod U and reverses the cock T. The water then forces the piston P, against the action of the spring Q, on to the valve M, which is normally held seated against the flange H. The valve M being pushed downwards from its seat, pressure fluid flows down the tube to the underside of the piston G to return the piston B. The valve T is again operated by tappet action and opens the space above the piston P to the exhaust R, so that the valve M is again forced on its seat. A piston b in a small cylinder a is subjected to the pressure of the compressed gas, so that, if this pressure becomes excessive, the pressure fluid is cut off by means of the cock e.
