Abstract

941. Hiscock, B. S. Jan. 13. Variable - speed epicyclic gearing is operated by means of disks h, n, Fig. 1, which screw with threads of opposite hand inside the gear-case g<1>, and the planet-carrier e, Fig. 2, is in two pieces bolted together with the spindles d of the planet -elements c &c. in between. The driving and driven shafts a, b are in line, and carry gears a<1>, b<1>, respectively, meshing with gears c, c<1>. The gears c, c<1> are connected by spindles d supported in the two-part carrier e, which is constructed as shown in Fig. 2. The carrier e has a projecting flange f adapted to be engaged externally by a conical brake surface on the disk h, and internally by a conical clutch m fast on the shaft a. A solid drive is produced when the clutch is in action, and a reduced speed when the carrier e is held against rotation by the brake. The clutch m is operated by turning the screwed disk n by means of a projecting lever o. The brake disk h is operated by a separate lever l. Since the threads on the disks h, n are of opposite hand, the levers o, l can be moved together to change the speed.
